The cultural stake

When assistants become the route to knowledge, the sources they retrieve and the distinctions they flatten affect what people encounter. Standard language may crowd out dialect, minority perspectives and uncertainty. A convincing answer can quietly replace the habit of consulting an original source.

Convenience versus pluralism

One simple answer is convenient; several defensible interpretations require effort. Cultural institutions must decide which questions permit synthesis, which require competing sources and when the responsible response is to leave uncertainty visible.
