What gives work meaning when machines can do more of it?

The question reaches beyond output to income, dignity, belonging and the opportunity to become skilled.

The human stake

A task saved is not automatically a life improved. The same technology may create room for judgment and learning, intensify the pace of work or remove the entry-level tasks through which expertise develops. The distribution of time, income, control and opportunity is a design decision as well as an economic outcome.

Immediate productivity versus future capability

Removing routine work can help experienced staff and weaken the apprenticeship of new staff. Preserving every old task is not a solution either. Organisations need to decide how people will learn, exercise judgment and share in the value created.
